ARC 257: Project 2

Analysis & Design of Adding on

For this project, we were tasked with designing an expansion to the Smith House, originally designed by Richard Meier. A key requirement was to carefully analyze the existing systems and patterns of the house and incorporate them into the new design to preserve its original architectural integrity.

Throughout the process, we used conceptual analogies along with a clear overarching idea and narrative to guide the design. This approach allowed us to respond to the needs of the new owners while remaining consistent with the original structure. At the same time, the addition introduces new systems and patterns that build on, rather than replicate, those already present in the house.

Narrative

The addition emphasizes health, movement, and shared experiences within the home. Designed for an owner with a strong interest in fitness and wellness, it introduces spaces that support both physical activity and everyday living, while maintaining a balance between active and restorative environments.

The home gym serves as the central and most important space in the design. It encourages daily movement and healthy routines while remaining visually and spatially connected to the rest of the home. Natural light and open circulation help create a sense of energy and openness, making the gym feel integrated rather than separate.

Supporting spaces such as the living room provide areas for relaxation and recovery, creating a contrast to the more active zones. Together, these elements demonstrate how architecture can promote well-being by combining movement, comfort, and social interaction into one cohesive design.
